Intermediate ADD Power: How to Calculate Computer Reading Strength from an Rx

A provisional intermediate sphere for computer glasses equals your distance sphere plus one-half of your near ADD, added algebraically for each eye. This gives a starting estimate, not a finished prescription. Before you use it, pull out your complete current bifocal or progressive Rx and measure your usual eye-to-screen distance in inches, because both numbers decide whether the estimate fits your setup.

How to Calculate Intermediate Computer Power from an Rx

The formula is simple: take the distance sphere for one eye, add half of the near ADD listed on the same prescription, and the result is a provisional intermediate sphere for that eye only. Cylinder, axis, prism, and any other listed values are not part of this arithmetic and should not be changed on your own.

Because sphere numbers can be negative or positive, the sign matters. If your distance sphere is -2.00 and your near ADD is +2.00, half of the ADD is +1.00, so the provisional intermediate sphere is -2.00 + 1.00 = -1.00. If your distance sphere is +1.50 with the same +2.00 ADD, the math becomes +1.50 + 1.00 = +2.50. The ADD is always added, even when the sphere itself is negative.

The ADD is the extra near-focusing power written on a bifocal or progressive prescription to handle close reading, and it is the number this calculation borrows to estimate computer strength. Without a correct ADD value from your current Rx, the formula above has nothing to work with.

A complete prescription lists OD (right eye) and OS (left eye) separately, each with its own SPH (sphere), CYL (cylinder), AXIS, and ADD. These can differ between eyes, so copying just one shared number can throw off the calculation. Before entering any number into an online order form, confirm the prescription and the distance it was estimated for, then check that the retailer's fields can actually accept an intermediate value. Follow these steps in order:

  1. Gather your complete, current bifocal or progressive Rx, including OD and OS sphere, cylinder, axis, and near ADD.
  2. Measure your usual eye-to-screen distance in inches at the desk where you'll use the glasses.
  3. Confirm that the order form has a field for an intermediate or computer prescription, and enter each eye's values exactly as written, not simplified.
